In August of 2020, my life forever changed. I am Paul Hunsicker, I am 58, and I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. For those who are unclear what CLL is, it is a blood cancer that stems from overproduction of white blood cells in the bone marrow (typically called the wait-and-see cancer). While there is no cure for this cancer, there are treatments when it becomes necessary.

On September 10, 2025, my oncologist found some alarming numbers in my blood work. He ordered a CT scan and some new blood tests. It was determined that the lymph node by my bile duct was now affecting my liver and spleen. The time had come to get me on a treatment plan. Until now, the side effects of my cancer were life-disrupting but manageable. Night sweats and high levels of fatigue were the two big ones that affected my quality of life and, quite frankly, were disruptive. The fear, anxiety, and apprehension that this diagnosis, or any cancer diagnosis, brings are indescribable.

The treatments that my doctor has determined are the best path for me are a 14-month regimen of oral medications and infusion treatments. When I found out what the medical costs would be, I was shocked, to say the least. My wife and I almost broke out in tears. I applied for financial support from the drug company, but while it was a helpful reduction, it is still a financial burden. This GoFundMe was not originally my idea. I have always tried to solve my problems privately. When I found out the side effects from this treatment program, I felt that I would be able to handle them. I was very wrong. The dizzy spells, headaches, and fatigue that no sleep will cure have been almost disabling. I had to reduce my work week to three days a week because I did not have the ability or energy to do more. My employer approved my FMLA intermittent leave for my treatments and periods of rest as directed by my doctor, but this is unpaid leave.

A very close friend of my wife and I, who is also a breast cancer survivor, said, "You should start a GoFundMe," then proceeded to yell at me when I told her that I wouldn't feel right taking money from others for something that is my responsibility. She told me, "How dare you determine what other people choose to spend their money on, or causes to contribute to. You do not have the right to deny anyone their choice to help someone, including you." After three weeks of my wife and I trying to determine the path forward, I decided to put some faith in the words our friend told us. There are good people that know you that may want to help.

For anyone stopping by to read my story, I thank you. For those who choose to donate, I also thank you and just know that anything you donate will help. There is no amount too small that will not be appreciated. I want to fight this, and I want to be able to grow old with my wife. While there is not a cure for this, there are two statistics I am focused on: the Progression-Free Survival rate and the Overall Survival rate. The PFS for my treatment plan is 26%, and the OSR is 96%. With your help of a donation, or a tunnel to reach more people; I have faith I can be around for another 15-20 years. Thank you and God Bless You.
