Donate to Offset Klaus' Life-Saving Vet Bills

Hi everyone, thanks for checking out Klaus’ story. Klaus just had his 2nd birthday and he’s already used up 3 of his 9 lives. We adopted him in May of 2022 from the San Francisco SPCA. Klaus was diagnosed with FIP about 13 months ago and we thought we’d lose him for sure. Miraculously, we found the right connections and people to import the GS needed to treat the virus and he improved steadily. After the 84-day regimen, Klaus’ condition was much improved but he still had severely swollen lymph nodes, worrying our specialist vet. Her concern was a pre-lymphoma condition; that after curing the FIP he was developing cancer. This diagnosis then led to a treatment of a small dose of steroid solution each day; this treatment brought his lymph nodes down to normal and he was healthy by every measure and metric. Klaus is currently being weaned off the steroid under the observation of our amazing specialist vet.

Then we got a curveball. I woke up on Saturday to find a vase of Stargazer lilies overturned in the kitchen and Klaus sticking his nose and paws into the flower and the puddle of water left behind. My new roommate had brought the flowers into the kitchen after I was asleep, unaware of the threat. Klaus was covered in lily pollen, extraordinarily toxic to cats. We got him to the vet immediately and he spent the weekend in the ICU under observation and having the toxins flushed out of his system.

Our little guy is very special, and a warrior at heart. He’s fought so hard through all of this, the FIP treatment injections were particularly rough for everyone involved and him spending two separate periods in the ICU (one during the FIP treatment and one during the lily exposure) was heart-breaking and fraught for us, not knowing if he’d crash while we were away.

Klaus is out of ICU, home where he belongs, showing no signs of renal failure from the lilies, and recovering from his ordeal.

We are grappling with enormous vet bills exceeding $10,000. I’m creating this GFM at the suggestion of one of Klaus’ many admirers. He is very, very loved. We hope folks who are in good financial situations will consider tossing a few bucks our way to offset this enormous debt and help us get back on our feet. Thank you to everyone for their support and kind words throughout this extended ordeal; it’s been a long journey starting with the FIP treatment in June of 2023. We were and remain determined to do everything we could to make sure this little guy gets the life he deserves after being rescued out of a parking lot in the South Bay Area. I’ve included links to my TikTok account where you can find tons of videos (sound up!) with Klaus and his bonded buddy, the black kitty named Cal.
