I Need a Kidney – A Call for Help
March is Kidney Awareness Month, and I felt it was the right time to share my story. My name is Nikki Watkins, a mother of four and a grandmother to three beautiful little ones.
I've been living with diabetes since I was 21. Despite my best efforts to maintain my health by following my medications and eating well, my kidneys are now failing. On February 6th, I received the heartbreaking news that my kidneys have stopped functioning, and I urgently need a transplant or to begin dialysis right away. My kidney function is currently at only 12%, and it’s declining quickly.
I’m reaching out to my family and friends on social media in hopes of finding a living kidney donor or financial support . I’ve started this GoFundMe to help me cover some of the financial burdens I'm facing. Unfortunately, my job is at risk because I’ve had to miss work regularly for doctor’s appointments, and there have been days I’ve been too weak to even get out of bed. Soon, I’ll need to begin dialysis 7 days a week, which will make it impossible for me to work and support my 10-year-old child.
This Friday, I’m scheduled for surgery to have a peritoneal dialysis catheter placed so I can begin dialysis treatments.
I understand these are difficult times for many, and even if you don’t have a kidney or funds to donate, sharing this post could help me find the support I need.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your love, support, and kindness.
