Help Support Monty’s Emergency Surgery Cost
Donation protected
Hello friends & family,
I am organizing this fundraiser for my sister and her family to help cover a medical emergency that was needed for their new puppy, Monty.
After experiencing sudden symptoms including difficulty breathing and discoloration under his skin he was rushed to Burlington Emergency Veterinary Hospital. After evaluation he was diagnosed with Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia. With platelet level of under 2,000 he was at high risk of bleeding out (the normal range of platelets is 175,00-500,00). It was determined that Monty had blood in his lungs that required immediate removal in order to save his life.
The medical procedures and extensive care cost them around $6,000. This was incredibly stressful and financially debilitating for them.
Monty is back at home and slowly beginning his recovery. He is being highly monitored as his platelet levels continue to rise. His low platelet levels had him at risk for spontaneously bleeding out. He is in a very delicate state, although no longer critical.
His recovery will require consistent testing and visitation with their local Vet. He will be on medication for at least 4 months, with frequent vet visits. Once he is cleared he is expected to make a full recovery and live a long and happy life.
Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP) in dogs is a blood disease in which the dog’s immune system attacks and destroys the body’s platelets. ITP is a serious disease and is common in middle-aged dogs. * Having this diagnosis as a 6 month old Puppy, makes Monty's case extremely rare and dire. This is why 3 nights and 4 days in the ICU at the Burlington Emergency Veterinary Hospital was a life or death decision.
ITP can be classified as either a primary or secondary disease. In primary, or idiopathic, ITP, there’s no known reason why the immune system is destroying the body’s platelets. In secondary ITP, the immune system destroys platelets in response to an underlying condition, such as cancer, infection, or toxin or drug exposure.
