Help Monique Cunningham! -: Support for Medical Bills Related to a Brain Tumor
Hi, my name is Savanna Mayhook at Smitty's Pharmacy Sandyport, and I’m reaching out to you with a heavy heart but a hopeful spirit. Our loved one, and loyal team member, Monique, has recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor, and we are asking for your help to support their medical journey. I'm sure most of you know her as the helpful face behind the counter at Smitty's Pharmacy Sandyport, helping you with your breakfast hot patties, children's medication, or sourcing a hard to find item!
Monique is an incredibly strong, kind, and resilient person who has always been there for friends and family, as well as putting her Smitty's team above herself. She has been facing unimaginable challenges, but with your support, we know she can fight this battle with the strength and courage that defines her.
The Journey So Far
It all started when Monique began experiencing blurred vision and peripheral vision loss. After numerous tests and doctor’s visits in Nassau, she was diagnosed with a craniopharyngioma. As you can imagine, this news has been a huge shock to all of us, but we quickly sprung into action.
After discussing with a neurosurgeon on island, it was determined that any surgery options on island wouldn't be viable, and the best course of action would be to fly into Miami and meet with a colleague at UM Health Tower.
A few days later we were in Miami and immediately admitted to hospital, and scheduled for emergency surgery the next day. Overnight bloodwork changed the diagnosis to a different type of tumor - a prolactinoma, likely benign, which was great news, and surgery was postponed. The first course of action being medication to shrink the tumor. A few days were spent admitted in UM Health Tower with additional bloodwork being run to get all hormone levels balanced with medication.
Although we so far have received great news, we are not out of the woods yet. Monthly bloodwork monitoring in Nassau with an endocrinologist is the next step to ensure the current medication dosages are correct. And we will return to UM Health Tower to meet with Monique's neurosurgical team in May to evaluate if the tumor is indeed shrinking, or if surgery is still necessary.
The medical expenses for her hospital stay and ongoing treatments are overwhelming. Unfortunately Monique does not have any insurance and we are forced to pay everything out of pocket.
How You Can Help
We are asking for your generosity in supporting Monique during this difficult time. Every donation—big or small—will go directly toward covering her medical bills, treatment, and other necessary expenses to help her focus on getting better without the added stress of financial strain.
If you're unable to donate, sharing this campaign with others is just as valuable. The more people who know about Monique's story, the greater the chance of reaching our goal.
Where Your Donations Go:
UM Tower Hospital Bill
Travel Expenses to Miami in February, and future visits
Medications and prescriptions
Current Endocrinologist appointments and monthly bloodwork
Future optometry visits to evaluate improvement of optic nerves on vision loss
Words from Monique:
"Being told I had a large brain tumor was possibly the worst day of my life. I immediately called Savanna in tears and she told me that we are a team and that we will get through this together. I'm so thankful for all of her support, in taking me to Miami, along with my sister Caffie who was able to fly in and assist as well. I'd be so grateful for your kindness and support during this difficult time. Every donation means the world to me and helps take the stress of financial burden off my shoulders so I can focus on positivity and getting back to normal."
Thank You
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any help you can provide. Your generosity, love, and prayers are a beacon of hope during this tough time. Together, we can give Monique the support they need to focus on healing and fighting back.
With gratitude, Savanna, The entire Smitty's Team, and Monique's family.
