I'm Miss Puerto Rico 1996, Maria del Rocio, and I'm 48 years old. I have two sons, one of whom has autism. On December 8, 2023, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. My story is unique because I have not just one, but two types of cancer. Most people are diagnosed with the more common Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma, but I also have a more aggressive form called Hürthle cell carcinoma. I had nine cancerous nodules, and the cancer has spread to four lymphatic nodules and my upper chest.

Maybe you're wondering if I had symptoms—yes, I experienced fever, difficulty swallowing, fatigue, and weakness. On February 14, 2024, I underwent surgery at the Norman Clayman Endocrine Institute in Tampa, where surgeons removed my thyroid, nodules, and lymphatic nodules. On June 17, 2024, I had radioactive iodine treatment at the Moffitt Cancer Center Hospital. After treatment, the evaluation showed that I need to continue monitoring the Hürthle cell carcinoma because it can reproduce quickly.

I need your help to pay for my surgery, treatment, and a new diagnosis of dysphagia, which requires additional treatment. The costs are overwhelming: Thyroid cancer removal surgery ($17,300), Moffitt Cancer Center evaluations and treatments ($26,700), and the new dysphagia study ($1,800).

Soy Miss Puerto Rico 1996, Maria del Rocío y tengo 48 años. Soy madre de dos hijos, uno de ellos tiene autismo. El 8 de diciembre de 2023 fui diagnosticada con cáncer de Tiroides. Mi historia es única porque tengo dos tipos de cáncer diferentes. A la mayoría de las personas les diagnostican el cancer mas común en la Tiroides que se llama Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma; pero en mi caso también tengo el Hürthle cell Carcinoma el cual es un cancer agresivo. Yo tenía nueve nódulos cancerosos y el cáncer se regó a cuatro nodulos linfáticos y la parte de arriba de mi pecho.

A lo mejor estarás pensando si tenía síntomas, sí los tuve: problemas para tragar, fiebre, fatiga y debilidad. El 14 de febrero de 2024 me operaron en el Instituto Endocrino Norman Clayman en Tampa, Florida. En la operación los cirujanos removieron la Tiroides, nódulos y nódulos linfáticos. El 17 de junio de 2024 recibi el tratamiento de Yodo radiactivo en el Hospital de Moffitt Cancer Center. Luego del tratamiento se llego a la conclusión de que tengo que estar monitoreando el Hürthle Cell carcinoma porque puede reproducirse muy rápido. Necesito su ayuda para pagar mi operación, tratamiento y recientemente encontraron tengo Disfagia, la cual tratarán también. 

Los costos de todo son muy altos: Cirugía remoción Tiroides ($17,300) , los tratamientos y evaluaciones en Moffitt Cancer Center ($27,600) y el nuevo estudio de Disfagia ($1,800).
