I’m putting this together for my amazing niece, Malina, her mom Andrea, and dad Theral. Malina was born with Crouzon syndrome, a rare condition that affects how the bones in her skull and face grow. She’s already had one major surgery as a baby to relieve pressure in her skull — and now, she’s preparing for another big one.

On Friday morning, Malina will undergo a mid-face advancement surgery at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. This isn’t a cosmetic procedure — it’s a major reconstructive surgery that will help her breathe more easily, protect her eyes, and support her facial development as she grows.

Andrea will be in Phoenix with her for several weeks, supporting her through recovery. On top of the emotional stress and logistics, they’re also facing insurance complications and unexpected costs that go way beyond what’s covered.
