The chosen family and friends of Makeda Coaston want to raise at least £6000 to support six months of one-to-one care. Makeda’s capacity to care for herself has been seriously impacted by dementia.

In May 2025, Makeda entered a nursing home in North London and is lovingly supported by us, her friends and chosen family. We visit her on a regular basis, to provide additional care and support.

We want to help Makeda stay connected to her wider world through supplementing the level and quality of her individual care. Witnessing Makeda’s rapid deterioration, it is clear to us that she needs more daily 1:1 support and stimulation including accompanied trips out. This support will be provided by a very special woman who gave Makeda exceptional loving care for more than 10 months prior to being admitted to the care home.

Those who met Makeda will know of the significant contribution she made throughout her working life. Makeda was a community activist, a cultural animateur, researcher, journalist and consultant. Her sphere of influence was global, spanning the USA, UK, Caribbean and Africa. She held many senior roles in the art and cultural sector including Chief Executive for the Minorities Arts Advisory Service (MAAS) and leading the London Mayor’s Commission on African and Asian Heritage until her retirement in 2009. She was also a founding Director of The Ubele Initiative.
