Help Baby Makayla Beat Neuroblastoma Little Warrior’s Fight for Life
Our sweet 10-month-old baby girl, Makayla, is fighting one of the hardest battles a child can face :— Neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer.
For weeks, we knew something wasn’t right. She was in pain, struggling to crawl, roll over, or sleep through the night. We made multiple trips to the doctor, desperate for answers. Then, on July 10th, after rushing to MUSC Children’s Hospital for the second time, our world came crashing down doctors finally found the cause.
Makayla had a 3-inch tumor, stretching across nearly half of her tiny back. The top of the tumor was pressing against her spine, causing excruciating pain and limiting her movement. Doctors warned us that if treatment didn’t begin immediately, she could lose the ability to move or worse.
In a moment no parent should ever face, we had to make a life-changing decision to start intense chemotherapy right away. Since that day, our brave little girl has endured more medical procedures than most adults: tumor biopsy, bone marrow aspiration, MRIs, CT scans, MIBG scans, blood transfusions, and chemotherapy.
She even spent her 10-month birthday in a hospital room, hooked up to machines yet still managing to smile through the pain. Her strength humbles us every single day.
We live in Hilton Head, and her treatments are in Charleston over three hours away. Every week, we make the long drives back and forth for scans, hospital stays, and blood work. Her chemo rounds last about six days, and our first stay was three weeks long. The emotional, physical, and financial toll has been unimaginable but we are holding on to faith, love, and hope.
