In July, I’ll be competing in one of the most gruelling endurance events in the world, that happens to be taking place in and around the city we love, Ironman Leeds. A full Ironman consists of the following three disciplines, completed in the order they appear in, all in under 17 hours:
1. Swimming – 2.4 miles (3.86 km)
2. Cycling – 112 miles (180.25 km)
3. Running – 26.2 miles (42.20 km, full marathon)
The level of commitment and discipline in training for an event like this is unlike anything I’ve ever done before, but by far it’s the most rewarding and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to test their physical and mental endurance.
For those of you who know me well, will know that I never competed in sports growing up, was never big on athleticism, and considered aimlessly flapping my arms and legs around in a pool, swallowing enough water to drown a small animal, as acceptable swimming - so, aye yeah, great start
But having been training non-stop now for 4 months. My endurance has increased dramatically, each training session I’m seeing great improvements, strengthening myself not only physically but mentally. I’ve learned so much about myself and what the human body is capable of when you push it to its limit in a relatively short space of time.
I’ve chosen to support Macmillan Cancer Support because cancer is a disease that has touched so many of our lives. Most of us know someone—whether a family member, friend, or colleague—who has faced this battle. In addition, Macmillan Cancer Support plays a vital role in helping families navigate the emotional and practical challenges that come with a diagnosis, providing comfort and care when it’s needed most.
