About:

Lucas had bloodwork done on April 10th, to understand the potential causes of migraine headaches and high blood pressure readings that started in January. His bloodwork results sent him immediately to the hospital indicating potential acute kidney failure. A few days later, the renal biopsy results confirmed a chronic kidney condition known as IGA and the need for a kidney transplant.

What’s Next:

Lucas has an appointment coming up in mid-May at the University of Michigan Kidney Transplant Clinic to meet with a team of specialists to determine the next steps and start the process of finding a kidney match.

The timeline will depend on kidney availability. His team of providers is keeping a close eye on his blood tests to see if he is going to need dialysis. Although a probable next course of action pre-transplant will be in-home dialysis. Lucas has not yet begun this process.

Donations to Cover Medical Costs:

As you can imagine, this is the hardest moment of their lives, and this journey will be more like a marathon rather than a sprint. And it is going to take a lot of time, energy, and money to get them through this. It is estimated that a kidney transplant costs around $38,000 out of pocket WITH insurance. We are estimating another $20,000 + to cover expenses associated with lodging, gas, food, lost wages, medications, post-operative care, and ongoing medical expenses.
