FROM CARING BRIDGE:

On Saturday, June 14th, Kris was taken to the ER suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis. In the week that followed, they were able to get her insulin levels back to normal. However, she was still displaying some mental confusion that was out of character. There was some concern about that and her recovery in general, so they ran some more tests and found that she has necrotizing fasciitis.

She underwent her first surgery very early on the morning of June 22nd (her birthday) to remove some of the necrotic tissue. She will need additional surgeries to remove the remainder of the necrosis.

She is currently in the surgical intensive care unit at HCMC. They are planning to transfer her to the burn unit at HCMC at some point. It is a nationally recognized facility that can help treat the complex wounds and skin loss she will be healing from. She is comfortable, sedated and on pain medication, but she needs everyone to keep her in their thoughts right now.

She will need several more rounds of surgery and has a long road ahead. Her recovery and hospitalization after the surgeries are expected to take 6 months or more.
