As many might already know, on August 21, 2023, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. It was found through a scheduled mammogram that I was overdue for. I underwent 4 rounds of chemotherapy infusions, a lumpectomy and removal of 11 lymph nodes, 6 weeks of daily radiation, and am still working through adjunctive chemotherapy pill treatment and immunotherapy infusions.

When I learned that I would need chemotherapy, I instantly panicked with the thought of losing my hair. Anytime I am ever asked what you like about yourself, I would answer with my hair. My hair has always been my security blanket. I wanted to preserve my identity and protect my confidence. I didn't want my kids to see me as a cancer patient. I wanted privacy and normalcy through this very not so normal time.

Thanks to a brochure in my pile of information about breast cancer and breast cancer treatment from my oncologist, I learned about Penguin Cold Caps that help to preserve your hair through chemo treatment. I had never heard about them before, so now I'm on a mission to help others know they have this as a potential option.

Keeping my hair and using the cold caps gave me a sense of control when I couldn't control anything else around me, and I want others to have that opportunity as well.

As I approach the one year anniversary of my diagnosis, I am kicking off my fundraising efforts for Koby's Confidence Fund. I am partnering with The Ascension St. Vincent Foundation to provide funding to others who want to save their hair but may not have the means to afford the cold caps. Money raised will go towards funding cold caps for those that can't get medical coverage and can't afford them. I will also be working on ways to provide education and awareness and possible training on how to use the capping systems.
