Dear Friends, Family, and Kind-hearted Strangers, I shall call “Angels”,
I am reaching out today with a heavy but expectant heart to ask for your support for my dear friend, Kim Wagner. Recently, Kim was faced with a challenging medical situation, leading to major brain surgery consisting of 5 procedures in one surgery slot, which occurred on June 30, 2025. She was told by her surgeon that she had a long road of recovery ahead of her. Her back-to-work date was projected for October 01, but due to ongoing, undiagnosed, debilitating symptoms, she is unable to return to work. She continues, more than 12 weeks AFTER surgery, to have excruciating migraines, 4 sounds-non-stop tinnitus, balance issues, thought process issues, and spinal fluid leaking into her skull, causing intense pressure in her brain. I took Kim to Raleigh on October 03 to meet with a new neurologist, thinking she would most likely be referred to a neurosurgeon to schedule a shunt placement in her skull to relieve pressure. He instead has ordered further imaging tests, an MRA, to hopefully pinpoint what is going on and the next course of action. Being out of work for 12 plus weeks has led to mounting medical expenses and stress on their essential everyday bills. Short-term disability is not full pay. They had, as responsible homeowners do, a few months of mortgage payments in savings for such a time as this. Unfortunately, that is now depleted and uncertain monetary needs are facing them. Add to that the incredibly difficult circumstance of just losing her job. This new development calls for those of us who care to help financially to keep her and Ken afloat. My hero, Kim, has fought like a well-equipped soldier against each major attack on her health since 2021, including 2 separate bouts of thyroid cancer, first the left then the right, renal cell carcinoma in her left kidney, afterwards kidney disease was found in her right kidney, she has had several excisions of melanoma skin cancer, and now this. It absolutely could not be helped that she has had to take several medical leaves from her work. Kim was looking forward to going back to her job on October 01, but as you read, her body is saying another thing.
This combination of medical expenses and the sudden loss of income has created an immense financial burden, making it difficult for Kim and Ken to manage essential costs like upcoming mortgage payments, utilities, and ongoing medical treatments. Again, their safety net is gone. Ken has been doing everything he can, including meeting with his boss to increase his duties so he can get a pay raise, but even so, their bills demand two incomes. Kim’s job officially ends on Oct 10. No pay, no medical insurance. I can’t describe the fear I saw in her eyes. I have helped Kim apply for Medicaid, and we pray it is approved and goes through quickly. The next thing we can do is apply for disability, since Kim is unable to search for a job at this time, she cannot file for unemployment. I will keep you updated on the progress of obtaining these programs for her. For NOW, they need our help to stay afloat during this critical time. I told Kim I would start this GoFundMe and her friends would come through for her. Please don't make me a liar! :-)
I will adjust the goal when I see they have things under control and can make ends meet on their own.
Your support will directly help Kim with:
  • Covering urgent medical bills, medications, and ongoing treatment costs.
  • Providing a safety net to help with essential living expenses while she focuses on her health and finds new employment.
Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a significant difference in easing the financial pressure and allowing her to focus on her recovery. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing this GoFundMe campaign with your sphere of influence on your social media platforms, which could make the difference in helping meet our goal. The more people we can reach, the greater our chances of providing the support Kim and Ken need and deserve. They are hard-working, kind, and giving people.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and consideration in being there for Kim. She and Ken really need your help! Your support means the world to her, to Ken, and me!
With heartfelt gratitude,
Joy Godwin
