Meet our friends who started their journey together in the mid-1970s...
He worked in a boys' home mentoring troubled youth for over 40 years, until he retired at age 75 due to a stroke. While she worked as a registered nurse for a nonprofit organization.
Sadly, at ages 79 and 81, like many in their age group, they now live on an extremely fixed income which doesn't cover their basic needs. When income was limited, they decided to take all the equity from their home via a reverse mortgage which they lived on for the next several years; however, that is now exhausted.
Since the small amount they have coming in doesn't cover all expenses, they've paid tiny amounts towards the utilities over the past 3 years just to keep the lights on, which means they had racked up a past due bill of nearly $30K. Thankfully, however, we've been able to get a portion forgiven current balance is $18K and are now on a payment plan, yet it leaves little room for other expenses.
In addition to basic living and utilities, their home is in disrepair from not being able to cover fundamental upkeep and they are faced with no homeowner’s insurance until they make necessary repairs and upgrades to make the home safe, including needing to replace the roof. These repairs were originally estimated at $60K, provided we can enlist volunteers to help with non-skilled tasks to reduce labor costs. The current need is $30K, we're also hoping to get some furniture, fixtures, and appliances donated, or at a great discount.
On top of everything, if they cannot get the necessary work done and pass a home inspection by Jan 2026, they will be faced with eviction per the conditions of the reverse mortgage. Imagine being kicked out of the very home they had once paid for in full!
Of course, every dollar raised will be greatly appreciated. Imagine if 300 people could donate $100 each. Although $30K may sound daunting, we believe in our hearts this is doable, and feel that this couple is a worthy cause after all they have been through, and all they have done for others.
Will you step up and help us where others have been unable, with a monetary gift to help them repair their home and make the last years of their lives as stress-free and filled with dignity as possible?
Thank you in advance for any gifts you may be able to help with, and thank you to those who have already helped or pledged to do so.
Let’s do this as a community of friends, colleagues, and neighbors!
