Dear Friends,
My name is Nile Garner, and I’m reaching out for help with rental assistance to prevent eviction. It’s difficult for me to share my story because I feel a sense of embarrassment, but I’m doing my best to be open.
For nearly 20 years, I’ve lived in an affordable housing complex, which initially provided a great place for me to begin my life. However, over time, the management has changed, and the building has deteriorated with ongoing issues like water damage and pests.
Almost a year ago, I lost my job, and despite applying for unemployment benefits, I was unfortunately denied. I’ve been actively searching for work, attending interviews, and trying everything I can, but it feels like the longer I’ve been out of work, the harder it’s become to find a new job.
Now, I’m facing the possibility of eviction. My landlord has sent me letters stating that I’m $10,000 behind in rent, and they’ll begin the eviction process soon if I can’t catch up. New management will no longer take 'partial payments'. On top of that, I have a 14-year-old son to care for and other bills I’ve fallen behind on. It’s been a struggle, and I’m doing my best to keep up.
Currently, my only source of income is Social Security benefits from my late husband, but it’s not enough to cover all of my expenses. I’m asking for your help to pay off my rent and buy some time as I continue searching for work. My goal is to regain financial stability and create a better life for my son and me.
Thank you so much for your kindness and support.
Sincerely,
Nile Garner
