My name is Lawanna and this is my daughter Violet. For two years I’ve worked as an apartment caretaker for my building, in exchange for a rent credit. This arrangement has allowed me and my daughter to have a place of our own that I can afford.
On Wednesday July 30th, I received an email from the property manager informing me that while my services have been appreciated, I’m no longer needed for caretaking services, therefore no longer edible for my reduced rent. I must move out September 1st or stay and pay hundreds more a month.
In spring, my father and Violet’s grandfather suffered a stroke due to complications from cancer. He was placed in hospice care, and I spent all my savings so Violet and I could quickly fly to Arizona to say our goodbyes. My father passed away in I never recouped the loss of this money, because I lost all my shifts at the restaurant I worked at. A reason given for my shifts being taken away, was that I missed too many shifts while grieving my father.
Until I can find more stable housing and until I can find more reliable work, I am humbly asking for some community help so that Violet and I can move on our own terms, when we are ready, instead of in 30 days.
Thank you
