On August 19th I was just leaving the river with my kids when I got a text from Gary saying " At Salem Hospital. I dropped off kids and headed back to Salem and met with him in the ER.
This is when we learned that his hemoglobin was at 4.6. Normal hemoglobin for a man is above 13.2. Hemoglobin below 5 can lead to heart failure and death.
He wouldn't be leaving the hospital that night. He needed a blood transfusion and some imaging to try to figure out what was going on.
The next day we were informed that Gary had cancer. It was somewhere in his colon. They believed that he had had the tumor for somewhere between the last 12 and 18 months and that the only reason he wasn't dead was because it was a slow bleed.
Since then he has been unable to work a regular job. He and I both do Doordash as our health allows but I am also disabled. We are struggling. Today we had court for eviction. We have not been able to come up with September or Octobers rent.
Over the last several weeks we have exhausted all of our resources at this point.
I am getting help from my case manager at Valley Mental Health. Gary has started the process through Pacific Source for financial assistance. But it takes time.
We have also started the process with ARCHES here in Salem. They are also able to help with rental assistance. But again, it takes time. Every other resource we had available, we learned simply have no funds.
We signed an agreement today to pay Septembers rent of 1,305. We also have a 300 court fee we have to pay by December 31st. That one we were able to get some extra time.
But then we will start the eviction process again for October.
This is another 1,305. We also are behind on our utilities. They average about 100 a month I believe. I'll check and update if needed.
We were able to get help with our electricity bill but as soon as that was paid we received another shut off notice.
The little bit of money that we have been able to bring in has had to go mostly to car insurance and our phones so that we are able to get out and work.
We are no longer really keeping our heads above water.
The amount that we are hoping to raise will go to our rent, utilities and food/household supplies to help us get back on our feet.
Tomorrow we find out when Gary will start chemo. I will be his care provider going forward but I am still in the hiring process and that again...takes time.
I know that things are really hard for a lot of people right now. I wish that I were in a position to help each and every one of you.
If you are able, any little amount helps.
If you are unable to help financially, we openly welcome prayers/energy,light and healing to help us get to the other side of this.
Sending my love and light to each and every one of you.
