My name is Katie Karnoupakis and before I share with you why my dear friend, Megan, has created this GoFundMe, I want to express my gratitude to you—our incredible friends and family. So many of you have texted, called, sent cards, and brought over dinner. Community is everything, and I treasure each of your friendships and thoughtful gestures.

On July 9th, I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma breast cancer. Over the next month and a half, I had more scans and doctor’s visits than I thought possible. On August 21st, I underwent a mastectomy. Last week, I had my first oncology appointment. The oncologist spent lots of time with Evan and me as we asked questions. Because of my extensive autoimmune history, full-dose chemotherapy is not an option. The oncologist is concerned the consequences of chemotherapy would be dangerous with potentially deadly side effects.

Because of this reality, I am pursuing cancer treatment at a clinic in California that supports and closely monitors the autoimmune diseases I have while creating an individualized cancer plan. They will work alongside my oncologist.

If you are able to donate, your money will go towards two things:

1) Supporting my family while I am on unpaid leave from work.

2) Helping with the expenses associated with the cancer treatment I must pursue.
