In June 2024, Karly was life-flighted to Denver Children’s Hospital, where she was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition called polymicrogyria. This condition causes abnormal development of the brain, resulting in excessive small folds that led to frequent seizures. After multiple medications failed to control her seizures, Karly underwent extensive medical evaluations and was determined to be a candidate for brain surgery.

We are incredibly grateful to share that Karly’s surgery went well with no complications. Following surgery, she transitioned directly into inpatient rehabilitation, where she began the challenging journey of relearning how to use the left side of her body. Every day she continues to make remarkable progress. She is now able to walk mostly on her own with some assistance for balance, and movement has begun returning to her left arm. While these milestones are encouraging, Karly still has a long road ahead.

Karly will continue participating in intensive therapy to regain strength, coordination, and independence with everyday tasks such as dressing, bathing, and toileting. Her therapy and medical care will continue for the foreseeable future as she works toward reaching her fullest potential.

Throughout this journey, Karly’s mother, Rachael, has remained by her side every step of the way. She will be out of work for the next six weeks and will then return on a part-time basis while helping Karly adjust back to school and daily life. As a single mother and the only provider, the loss of income combined with ongoing medical expenses has placed an enormous financial strain on their family. In addition to the continued costs of therapy and medical care, they are also facing necessary household repairs and everyday living expenses while Rachael is unable to work full-time.
