Less than 2 weeks after her 30th birthday Kara went to the ER with difficulty breathing, speaking and walking. She was sent home later that day after her labs and CT scan came back normal. Later that night things got worse and she was rushed back to the hospital where she was intubated and had endless days of tests and lab work done. On June 21st she was transferred to USC for a higher level of care. When she arrived they diagnosed her with Polyarteritis Nodosa, an extremely rare autoimmune disease in which blood vessel inflammation injures your organs. The inflammation has caused her blood vessels to become weak and stretched out leading to over 20 aneurysms all throughout her body including her brain, arms, legs and stomach. While Kara’s condition is incurable, her disease has the capability to go into remission. Doctors are treating Kara aggressively with chemo and steroids making every effort for her to go into remission. Remission must take place before they can send her to a rehab facility where she will then learn to move and walk again all on her own.

Kara has a long road to recovery and we are unsure when she will be able to return to work. Her fiancée, Ray, has taken on a great load and has been doing his best to keep up with the mounting bills of day-to-day living, all while trying to be present for their 4 boys as well. It is the goal of Kara’s friends and family to alleviate the financial burden so Kara’s only necessary focus is her medical well being and remission of this rare disease. We are asking for prayers and donations, big or small, during this time to help with the daily life expenses while Kara remains in the hospital. It is currently unknown when she will be out of the hospital or how long her recovery will be, but her family is very hopeful with the progress she has been making.
