NECROTIC ENVENOMED LEG IN DIRE NEED OF DEBRIDEMENT - KALI FROM CALIFORNIA WAS BITTEN BY A COPPERHEAD & DRASTICALLY NEEDS HELP NOW!!!! (Skip to paragraph 4 [■] to see quote info $$$)
EMERGENCY:
Kali was bitten 2 (possibly 3 times) on her front right leg by a copperhead. Kali didn't receive antivenom within 24 hours of the bite, as you all may know, the All Star Fur Pet Foundation foster agency & I are completely out of funds at this time (due to the volume of Maggie's prior/existing rescues and our's as well). We need your donations and/or help because Kali is in BAD shape and she must be seen by another vet at a surgical clinic for this. WE HAVE 3-5 DAYS TO RALLY FUNDS FOR KALI. KALI SERIOUSLY RISKS LOSING THE LEG AND BECOMING TRIPEDAL. THIS WILL BE A LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY AND SHE WILL HAVE PERMANENT NERVE DAMAGE, AT BEST. GOD AND GOODNESS FORBID THE WORST. Typically copperhead bites are nowhere near as dangerous to dogs as humans but Kali received a very large dose of venom when she was struck more than once.
HOW KALI HAS REPRESENTED:
2/22 Kali received supportive care at Ballantyne UrgentVet under Dr. Stephanie Helmer where she was initally diagnosed with a copperhead bite. Clinical findings were as follows: "Significant circumferential swelling of right forelimb from distal toes to shoulder. Single puncture wound on dorsal aspect of right front paw. Bruising extending up the limb. When the fur over the bruised regions is clipped, the skin bleeds easily. The skin began dripping blood where the fur was shaved. Throughout the time the patient was in clinic, the fluid dripping went from bloody to serosanguinous in nature. No petechiae/ecchymosis anywhere else on body." Kali received supportive care, pain management, her heart rate/blood pressure were deemed good and she was sent off to be closely evaluated 24/7 at home for petechial hemorrhage or any further loss of appetite/thirst. Dr. Helmer showed the best place to examine for petechiae, on Kali, is in her ears/on her stomach [since she is so fluffy and has black gums]) or inguinal (groin) bruising, as these mean she must be emergently seen. After discharge at home, Kali represented normal bathroom movements/finally began regaining normal appetite/thirst, displayed severe swelling, excruciating pain and more weeping of serosanguinous fluid.
2/23 Kali was brought in for a recheck, where her wounds were worse upon representation. Very elevated fever, extreme swelling still, extreme serosanguinous fluid weeping, but seemingly exhibiting less pain, for now. Swelling also started to slightly subside but we're not in the clear. An additional puncture wound was verified under the arm, potentially a third in the necrotic spot on her paw. Her inner leg had a necrosis spot about the size of a pea, while her paw pad had a spot about the size of a nickel. No hematuria (bloody urine), normal bowel movements, eating has stabilized again/drinking normally thankfully but still severely underweight. Her diagnosis of copperhead bite was extended with secondary tissue necrosis. Normal heart rate and blood pressure still. These necrotic wounds WILL worsen, the question is how bad.
[■] WHERE WE ARE NOW/NEXT STEPS:
2/24 Debridement at Park Road Animal Hospital or Best Care Animal Hospital Matthews are Dr. Helmer's first suggestions (respectively) for cost effective care. The estimate given by Park Road starts at ■$1,200■.
Even if you only have $1 to donate, EVERY little bit helps!!! If you don't have $1, PLEASE consider liking and/or sharing this!!! Likes and shares are what initally saved Kali's life on her last day to be euthanized at the Lancaster CA shelter where she was abandoned sick and terrified!!!
SPECIAL THANKS TO:
Dr. Stephanie Helmer, Ty, Darius and every one that saw us at UrgentVet, you're heroes! Thank you so SO much to all of you for being who you are and doing what you do!!! Thank you so SO much to All Star Pet Fur Foundation, Maggie Burlingham and to every donator for saving Kali's life too! Kali is the best girl; please consider helping her to get the best treatment possible!!
KALI'S IDIOPATHIC EPILEPSY TREATMENT PLAN FOR NOW:
Dr. Helmer explained copperhead bites reportedly don't induce seizures. Hopefully Kali can stay off her Zonisamide without any complications. You all may recall that from what we've researched while trying to adopt out Kali, I've read that stress can induce seizures. We have an active prescription for that thanks to Dr. Helmer too now, should we need imminent refills.
2/25 UPDATE:
Kali's GFM donations were used for her wellness check at Park Rd. Animal Hospital today (~$100). Dr. Kolli advised (as Dr. Helmer did) to put Kali on Tramadol (as her wound cleanings are agonizing). Kali was written a prescription for Rimadyl too and I was sent home with a cleaning kit and Silver Sulfadiazine Cream, USP 1%. I started cleaning her wounds about 3 hours after Tramadol was administered (during peak effect). They are to be cleaned every 12 hours. The outpatient cleaning schedule is as follows: all the wounds/surrounding area is cleaned, the foot is left to fully dry, then ointmented. We tried Ginger's old boot which worked but was slightly too big for Kali. We also ran out of Malabar's remaining Proviable.
2/26 UPDATE:
Kali had already received 2 doses of Tramadol before Dr. Panuska with Friendship Animal Hospital (Kali's primary care vet) frantically called me URGENTLY asking Kali be taken off Tramadol IMMEDIATELY (as it can cause *terrible* side effects in canine patients with idiopathic epilepsy). The Tramadol was discontinued and returned to Kishan (Pineville Pharmacy) with a written statement. Dr. Kolli has written a longer Gabapentin prescription that I picked up (~$20). Kali got more proviable, Authority Sensitive salmon diet (since her funds are so limited, we'll return to homemade when we can) high calorie gel, and a recovery boot with Microban too (that Dr. Kolli approved ~ $97.84). We have received additional donations via Venmo to try to assure Kali has as much money as possible available in the next 3 days for her surgical debridement. We still need to be prepared for anything, including amputation. I'm happily prepared to sign legally notarized contracts stating I'll reimburse individuals as soon as my streaming funds for work transfer over to my bank! Please consider donating (even just $1), sharing/liking! KALI'S QUALITY OF LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!!!!
2/27
Park Rd. Animal Hospital, Ballantyne UrgentVet and Maggie were all updated on Kali's status:
"Kali wants to be so playful again (I have to calm her down :D ). She is tolerating cleanings/ointment MUCH better now, drinking/eating wonderful, pooping great again on her Proviable, urine habits still normal, her wounds look so much better (granted, in my unprofessional opinion). Her GFM is at abt $970, I have raised additional funds on my end now too and hopefully mynwork funds will clear next week Will you please update Kali's record with the office and Dr. Kolli?
(FYI The pad Kali is on is clay stained from camping it is NOT as dirty as it looks, I haven't had time to bleach it. I shake off/lint roll the backyard debris when she stands up)"
Park Rd. called me directly and verified Kali is still healing as hoped with her outpatient care.
2/28
"Good morning Park Rd. team, please see Kali's wounds before we clean them this a.m.
Every day now behavior wise, Kali is just feeling better and better and more energetic. All her habits, sleeping/bathroom/eating/drinking are still good too
Tolerating her cleanings/ointment better still too"
Park Rd. office replied:
"Looking good for now, you can clean and apply the ointment."
All involved professionals were updated accordingly.
3/1
"Kali feels GREAT again, she is really acting like herself!!!! Playing 24/7 again, so happy, tolerating cleanings *great*, peeing/pooping normal still, sleeping great, in my unprofessional opinion these wounds look so great! Should she be brought in for her re check this weekend potentially still or do you all prefer to wait to next week? Her GFM now covers the inital quote Kr. Kolli had told Dr. Helmer 2/22 but clearly if debridement isn't needed. . .
She is *very very* well trained, if any of you know anyone looking to adopt (I would imagine not since we all have bleeding hearts but I figure it can't hurt to ask!)"
Park Rd. office replied verifying they got Kali's updates and they are thrilled with her progress!! Go Kali!!!!
All involved professionals were updated accordingly.
3/2
Daily wound pictures were texted to Park Rd. Animal Hospital (per usual). Dr. Kolli verified everything looks great with Kali still.
All involved professionals were updated accordingly.
3/3
Kali's wounds are still healing as anticipated! We are so hopeful now that these wounds should close with NO DEBRIDEMENT!!!! GO SUPER STAR KALI!!!
