As parents, there is nothing more important than the health and well-being of our children. This past March, our Brother Jamel Cauthen of ATU Local 1056 faced every parent's worst nightmare his son, Justin, fell gravely ill. What seemed like a typical sick call quickly turned into a life or death situation. After extensive testing and evaluation, doctors diagnosed Justin with acute heart failure. His only chance of survival, a pediatric heart transplant.

As a widowed father who lost his wife a few years ago to a sudden heart event, Jamel did what any loving parent would do he stood by his son through every terrifying moment. He juggled hospital stays, doctor visits, and emotional stress, all while trying to maintain his responsibilities at work. But as Justin’s condition grew more serious, Jamel was forced to miss shifts and give up hours to be by his son’s side.

Then, a miracle a donor heart was found, and Justin underwent a successful transplant at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, one of the leading pediatric centers in the region. Justin’s body accepted the new heart, and his recovery began. But while his health is improving, the financial strain on the Cauthen family is mounting. Months of lost wages have caused them to fall behind on essential bills, including the mortgage and basic household expenses.
