On July 10, 2024, I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. This is form of cancer that affects your blood. It creates cells call blast cells that quickly reproduce and start to reduce your white and red blood cells. I spent three weeks in Mayo Clinic from July 18, 2024, to August 12, 2024. I spent an additional week in September and then additional two weeks in October after a biopsy showed the leukemia had returned. It was determined at that point that I would need a stem cell transplant. The transplant requires multiple tests prior to the transplant, chemo to kill of my current bone marrow, and then approximately three months in Rochester after the transplant to recover.
The transplant is scheduled for February 17, 2025, but the chemo will take place from February 11, 2025, to February 15, 2025. The 100 days does not start until the day of the transplant. I will be staying at the Gift of Life transplant house in Rochester. This housing is at a highly reduced cost of $30 per night, but it still comes to roughly $3000 dollars over the course of the stay. I will also be receiving Long Term Disability at 60% of my normal pay. This will not cover home expenses as well as my utility and other expenses. Also, I will incur medical costs in that will easily max out my out-of-pocket expenses of $6000 within the first few days of chemo.
One of the hardest things for me to do was decide to ask for assistance from friends and family. However, it I know that to cover the costs of the transplant and maintain my home as well, I will need some assistance. For this, I ask that you help me by donating to my GoFundMe account and know that I truly appreciate any gifts you can provide.
Thank you,
Jim
