For those of you that know Terry, you may have noticed his absence recently from social media and life in general. Unfortunately, over the past several years, Terry has been battling numerous medical conditions that put him in a near death situation this past spring. Here are some details of what he’s endured.
On April 3rd, Terry had a planned surgery at Reading Hospital to reverse the colostomy he had put in the prior year. Everything seemed to be going fine, he was even told by his doctors that he would be going home early but on April 18th, things began to spiral. That day the reversal blew apart and his intestines were perforated, forcing the doctors to perform emergency surgery. He was sedated and put on a ventilator for the first time. The next day they went back in to clean out the infection they found in his intestines and pieced him back together. On the 20th, they removed the ventilator and put an ileostomy in him (used his small intestines this time). Things remained relatively unchanged until the 28th, when there was another complication that required them to go back in, insert a surgical mesh and repair the incision. Following that surgery things did seem to improve but he started to experience a lot of pain, retain fluid and had difficulty breathing. Around May 5th or 6th, his organs began to shut down, beginning with his lungs. He went into respiratory failure, forcing the doctors to put him back on the ventilator and also sedated him. The next day he experienced renal failure. The doctors feared the that the rest of his organs were going to shut down, so the doctors began dialysis to improve his kidney function and try to prevent the others from shutting down. Dialysis continued for several weeks until his kidneys were able to perform again on their own. The dialysis removed 70 pounds of excess fluids over that period of time.
Fortunately, due to the Doctors quick actions, 24 hour care by the nurses, Terry’s overall will to survive, and A LOT of help from above, he was able to pull through. However, he still has a long road ahead of him and requires some support from those of us who know and care for him. Currently, he needs around the clock care and there are some things that would make not only his life easier, but also for his family and friends who help take care of him. Here are some things that he is in immediate need of that this goFundme will help purchase:
Current Needs
* Motorized wheelchair
* Mechanical lift to add & remove wheelchair from the car
* Powered lift recliner chair (will help him stand up)
* New Accessible Shower
* Many other things as well
In case you are unaware, here is also a list of what Terry has been battling for the past several years, in addition to the amount of time he as spent in the hospital.
Previous Medical Battles
* First diagnosed with Gout in January 1996 (every doctor he sees says he has the worst form of Gout they have ever seen).
* In 1999, a Doctor told him he would be in a wheelchair by age 30.
* Around 2006 he was diagnosed with early kidney disease, which runs in his family.
* In 2015, he had hand surgery to remove the gout, followed by 3 months of rehab to regain the use of his right hand (which he is right handed).
* In 2015, he was first prescribed Krystexxa, which is an infusion to treat severe forms of gout. He received about 5 treatments of this before his body began producing antibodies against it, thus rejecting the medicine.
* In 2019, they decided to put him on an immune suppressant to weaken his body before attempting Krystexxa a second time. Unfortunately, his immune system became so weak that he began to get infections in his legs from open wounds created by the gout.
* That led to his first leg surgery in 2020 to clean out the gout and they discovered deposits that were colonized with bacteria.
* In September of 2020 he was hospitalized with congestive heart failure for the first time.
* He was hospitalized multiple times in 2020 & 2021 for heart failure.
* In April 2022, he had a defibrillator and pacemaker put in.
* Numerous hospitalizations during 2022 for leg infections.
* In October 2022, he had trauma surgery to repair a hole in his intestines from a hernia.
* In November 2022, he had surgery to remove gout deposits out of his legs and left hand.
* January 2023, hospitalized due to leg infection and treated for Covid.
* July 2nd 2023 he had a diverticulitis attack that resulted in his bowels erupting in 3 areas, which resulted in him having trauma surgery to put in a colostomy bag.
* Numerous hospital visits for leg infections throughout the rest of 2023.
* January & March 2024 admitted to the hospital for leg infections.
Days Hospitalized
* 2019 - 30 days
* 2020 - 50 days
* 2021 - 53 days
* 2022 - 70 days
