Since Emiliano’s passing in November 2024, we’ve been deeply moved by the stories people have shared about the impact he had on their lives. We've heard how he helped others feel seen and welcomed, encouraged friends to pursue their dreams, or simply stood up for what he believed in. Emiliano lived with courage and authenticity—and in doing so, he inspired those around him to do the same.
To honor his legacy, we are launching the Huitzilin Award, named for the Nahuatl word for hummingbird—a symbol of hope, transformation, and the soul’s endurance.
In its inaugural year, the Huitzilin Award will recognize two seniors from South High School who embody courage and authenticity with a $1,000 grant each to support them in the next phase of life. This is a peer-nomination award, and recipients will be selected by a committee of Emiliano’s family members. The award is not tied to any specific post-secondary plan—it will be paid directly to the awardees, to support whatever their next steps in life may be. Our hope is to continue the Huitzilin Award indefinitely and 100% of funds raised will be used for this and future years' awards.
