My name is Hilary. My husband is Angel. We’ve been happily married for almost nine years. During that time we’ve faced challenges, but we’ve always come out on top. However, at this time we’re facing economic challenges that we just can’t seem to overcome. Angel lost his job in December and, in spite of hundreds of applications, has been unable to find new work. So we’ve made the decision it will be best for us to move to the Dominican Republic, which is where my husband is from.
We will be making this move at the end of June. We’re asking for help, though, since right now we’re struggling to even pay rent and other bills. We’d like to ask for any help you may be able to offer. Our goal of to raise $25,000. We know that’s a lot. We’d like to share with you how that money will be spent.
First would be the shipping costs to send what few items we’ll be taking with us. We anticipate this will be between $3000-$4000, depending on the cost of gas and shipping at the time we ship our items.
Second, and our biggest expense will be a car. Unfortunately, in the DR big items like a vehicle do not cost significantly less than in the US. We expect to be spending at least $10,000 to be able to purchase a vehicle that will meet our needs and the demands of Dominican roads.
Third will be our housing. We plan to pay for a full year rental up front to give us a safety margin as we get established in the country. Having looked into the housing available in the area close to his family, we expect to be paying $4000-$4500 for that full year.
And last will be the cost of furnishing the house. We have been selling what we own here just be able to pay bills, so we will be buying bedroom, living room and kitchen furniture. This includes a refrigerator and stove, as those items are not included in rentals in the DR. We expect these cost to be between $4000-$6000 dollars. These are items that also are not significantly less than US prices.
We will also have the costs of flights, internet, phones, insurance and other every day expenses that we will face.
We hope that with your help, we can make this transition and have a great start to a new life and new possibilities. We understand the challenges and difficulties so many are facing right now.
