Our names are Carlos & Tahj and on January 26th, 2023, our home at 4055 Carpenter Ave went up in flames. It was a normal day for us both Tahj was coming home from work at 5:00 pm while I was preparing to head out to the supermarket. 10 minutes before Tahj walks into the apartment the lights go out, I then call the superintendent of the building and he then asks me to send him a video. Less than 5 minutes after sending the video he was at my door. With the super's entrance, we both discovered a glowing hue coming from the light fixture in the bathroom. He then asked me to unscrew the fixture and when removing it I felt heat, so I had to grab a towel to remove it. After removing it the space between the roof & ceiling exposed what the firefighters described as a "roaring" fire. It wasn't until I called 911 that anyone in the building was aware of the fire. This was the start of a 4-alarm fire that spread across both conjoining buildings, injuring 3 firefighters & displacing over 100 residents including us. We just wanted to enjoy a normal Thursday night when we saw everything we own burn before our eyes. Losing everything is one of the most humbling experiences and I would not wish it on my worst enemy. Extremely blessed for what we did not lose being our beautiful dogs Max & Ruby & our lives. Our apartment is currently inhabitable and nothing indicates that it will ever be again. We would appreciate any donations to help rebuild the life we worked so hard for.
