Hey guys, my name's Brian. This gofundme is NOT for me. this is for my best friend DarkSteel who would never want to burdon anyone other than himself with his financial kicks-to-the-nuts, so I'm doing it to help us all out because we are quite low on options at this point. Which I guess we should get into.
So, the tl:Dr is that, we need to get him a new car. We have needed to get him a new car since 2018. Things have been simply way too tight and way too unlucky to ever GET towards that point before getting knocked back down to the point of "scraping by". We've now gone through 3 stopgap cars in a row and SOMETHING has to change or it'll just be stopgap cars until the end of time... Hence, this.
------------------------------
Back in 2019, his Hyundai Senata got into a fight with a deer and the deer won (Oh wow, he actually had to look it up when I asked him what car he had before all this started cause he's been through so many). Luckily this was right as the Covid lockdowns were starting, and luckily (in this context) for me, I was being paid to sit at home because both of my jobs are in the hospitality/entertainment industry, and thus I was able to lend him my car to use for practically the whole year with him lending it back to me once a week for groceries.
2020 he'd managed to have enough to buy a used car with financing from a dealership and that was good for a time until it was totaled when someone in front of him stopped short and caused a collision, and in a rare turn, it was actually the other guys fault, whom even the officer responding to the crash said should NOT have been driving that day. So back to borrowing my car for a bit, and then comes 2021.
2021 we get my car back to me when we both realize that sharing my car isn't a great solution after a couple months, and I help him out with a $2000 used car off craigslist to solve things for a bit while he saves up for a full on new car. All the while he'll pay me back $50 a week until it's all good and square.
A third of the way through THAT plan, and the stopgap car gets goddamn T-boned in the front quarter panel... 8|
SO THAT car is now totaled, and he's so far got me back only $700 so far, but there's no choice, he needs a car in order to keep working in order to afford to live and pay me back and ironically, afford a new car.
In a rare stroke of luck this time, we find an even BETTER used car off craigslist for him to use as another stopgap, with less mileage and issues than the current one had. So $1500 spent and we've got a new old Honda Civic to use for a while in 2023.
Well that car has lasted for the past 2 years surprisingly well, only needing 2 repairs in that whole time, needing another thousand or so total to keep it up and running, as where the other stopgap car needed 4 repairs that ate up a good 2 grand over the course of things. (Hence why they weren't able to do the whole "paying me back steadily $50 each week" thing again cause they were constantly way too tight budgeted from the repairs and stuff)
And then we get to today. Where I'm at a tough financial spot myself, scraping by, and then the Civic begins to have issues. Two repairs in the span of two months, needing about a thousand to cover them, and then suddenly it develops an overheating issue 0_0. Third repair in a month. Great, just great, ok, what is it this time? Hopefully something simple that we can manage to squeak by affording and-.... Head Gasket.
Head Gasket...
For those who don't know. A head gasket replacement requires taking the whole engine apart basically, and it's a $2000 repair or more. Double what the car is worth.
I'm tight on money and can't afford to cover this easily like I did before, I gotta keep my car so I can go to work and make money myself, and he absolutely has been just stuck in scraping by mode for YEARS now and thus can't afford to finance a new car with the insurance requirements on a financed car, nor does he have the cash lying around to get another stopgap car without help. The used car market is AWFUL at the moment, the ECONOMY is awful at the moment, and so here we are breaking the glass in case of the emergency, which this officially qualifies for.
I've got three goals in mind here for how successful this campaign could potentially be.
1 - $1000. This would be what I hope we can get to at least, at this point we can afford another stopgap car after selling the Civic for half a grand to whomever will buy it, and this buys us some time to figure things out.
2 - $6000. This would cover the cost of another stopgap car like before, AND pay me back all of what I have lent him/covered for him, so that weight no longer is hanging over his head or mine.
3 - $15,000. This would do all of the above, except we'd swap out the idea of the next car being another used stopgap car for financing a new car and having enough to actually afford the insurance and stuff.
4 - $25,000. Covers the whole cost of a new car which would solve everything permanently. This is the dream, and we'd be so thankful to get this amount, I'm not sure what we could do in exchange, but definitely something.
