Hi, my name is Ellen I am 19 years old and I am fundraising to upgrade my wheelchair. I was a perfectly fit and healthy child, extremely sporty and active until the age of 13 where I progressively became very sick with Lyme disease. Some people are really lucky and get an early diagnosis, early treatment and can put this disease into remission, however for me it has been quite a different story. My Lyme disease has led to me being house bound for the majority of the time and when I am able to get out I rely on mobility aids. Originally I thought I would regain mobility quickly, so we picked up a second hand wheelchair from the charity shop but as time progressed I found I couldn't use my wheelchair on grass or anywhere that wasn't flat, so again thinking this wasn't going to be forever we bought an wheelchair from amazon which has been great but is far too bulky, heavy and not practical for everyday use. It has now been 6 years since my illness first started and my family and I have now accepted that I will be in a wheelchair for a long time, we have luckily managed to get a power attachment second hand to give me more independence, however the bulkiness of my wheelchair still makes things difficult. The reason I am now crowdfunding is that I have a more rare disease in the UK, which is not routinely treated by the NHS so I have had to find a private clinic, so all of my care is funded by my family. I am 19 now and as I am unable to work it would be nice for me to have a go at raising some money myself to make my life a bit easier, as it is very difficult always being reliant on others.
