When having inspections done on the new home they were purchasing, Tyler and Ashley found that the sewer line was a mess. It was put on their contingencies to be replaced. They were told by their realtor that the company doing it found old drain tile around the house that was connected into the sewer line. The house is older and that is now no longer in code. They were told the company disconnected the old drain, put in the new sewer line and that they were good to go. After closing on their new house on April 28th, two weeks later, on May 12th, after a day and a half of heavy rain, the two found a giant puddle along two walls in their basement.
They called their realtor and insurance to try to find out what could have gone wrong and how it could be fix. After it had drizzled all day on Mother’s Day, Tyler and Ashley came back that evening to find water in puddles coming in from all sides of the basement, with one carpeted room completely drenched. Monday morning, they both had to take off work to unfinish our previously finished basement, ripping up wet baseboards, carpet, and laminate, and cutting into the drywall. By that point, their realtor had contacted the company that did the sewer line. They told her that disconnecting the old drain was most likely the cause, but they say they won’t be held liable because their only job was the sewer line, and the drain was out of code.
After filing a claim with insurance, they ultimately denied Tyler and Ashley, saying because it was due to rainwater. The insurance also said they would not even fight against the company that caused this to happen in the first place. Water has still been coming in every time it rains while the two have been trying to gather their resources for the solutions. They have had borrowed fans and dehumidifiers running since Mother’s Day weekend, and shop vacs to vacuum up water whenever it rains just to keep up.
On top of all the home issues they’ve been having to deal with, Tyler’s Subaru engine gave up on him recently, which calls for a total engine rebuild. While they have an ‘Old Faithful’ type of backup car for now, it’s only a temporary fix since both back tires have rusted frozen and no amount of WD40 or hammer beating will make them rotate.
Tyler and Ashley have been quoted $6500 for the sump pump installation, close to $6000 for the engine and just under $1000 for Stanley Steemer’s services to properly clean everything up. I know that there is a strong community of love and support surrounding these two selfless and amazing humans, and my hope is that others can rally to help financially relieve them of these seemingly insurmountable burdens. Thank you, and please share even if you cannot donate! Let’s help restore some normalcy for them!
