I’m Ellie’s sister, Noël. I’m organizing this for the Pfouts family. There have been some unforeseen complications with Ellie’s pregnancy:

• Ellie went into preterm labor a couple of weeks ago and has been put on bedrest. This wouldn’t be that big of a deal, except now she won’t have worked long enough to receive benefits for maternity leave. This represents a loss to the family of at least $16,000.

• The preterm labor was caused by an excess of amniotic fluid, which her medical team was able to remove some of. When they ran routine tests on the amniotic fluid, they found that baby Isaac has Downs Syndrome.

• Downs Syndrome causes other complications, among them preterm delivery, higher chance of C-section, and a condition where the placenta ages at a faster rate, which can create risks for fetal survival.

• In addition to all of this, baby Isaac also has duodenal atresia, a birth defect where his intestines aren’t forming correctly. This can be corrected, but will require surgery in his first 48 hours of life.
