Lindsay and Andy’s friends and family hope they can focus on Andy’s recovery instead of worrying about medical bills. Andy has papillary carcinoma. The first surgery removed the large mass with good clean margins, but there were 4 affected blood vessels. This type of cancer can spread, so any tumor over 1 cm (Andy’s was 4 cm) requires a complete removal of the thyroid and any surrounding lymph nodes. He will have this surgery Tuesday, 10/4, which is more complex and invasive than the first and will require 2 nights in the hospital for monitoring and recovery due to multiple drainage tubes around the incision. About 4 weeks after the surgery he will have radiation therapy that will target and kill any remaining thyroid cells in his body. This is a well known course of treatment and almost never results in a reappearance of the cancer, though he will be monitored over the next 5 years to be sure.
