This is completely out of my comfort zone and never something I thought I would have to do, but here we are.
My wife and I found out we were pregnant on our third try. All of the excitement came crashing down on December 20 when we went for our first appointment. I was 7 weeks along, and the doctor stated that the ultrasound didn't show a pregnancy. We were then sent to the hospital for more testing and were told that my pregnancy was ectopic. This means that the embryo is implanted in the fallopian tubes rather than the uterus. The good news was that it had not ruptured, and all of my test results pointed toward me being the perfect candidate for a medication that will stop pregnancy and dissolve the embryo that is in my right tube.
12 days later, on January 1, I had sudden severe pain while at home, to the point that I could not get up off the floor. After calling them, my wife rushed me to the hospital. Blood tests, urine tests, & ultrasounds all showed nothing happening. None of them showed any sign of rupture. It wasn't until the CT scan results came back that I had blood pooling in my abdomen. Without much time to say goodbye, I was being wheeled away for emergency surgery to save my life.
The goal was to be able to complete the surgery through the scopes, but there was too much blood. The doctors had to cut me open. 5 hours later, I finally made it out of surgery. I lost my right tube and my right ovary, but I am alive. That was the most important.
The reason that I am sharing my story with you is that we need your help. I already expect that I will have bills piling up shortly from this emergency surgery and a 4-day hospital stay. What I didn't expect was that I would be on unpaid leave. For these 6 weeks of recovery at home, I will not get any type of support through my school district, only because I am new to the district. The district won't even allow my coworkers to donate sick days to me. My wife and I are prepared for the hospital bills, but we are not prepared for my paychecks to be 100% gone. On top of that, since I will be out of work for longer than a month, I am also going to be responsible for paying for my health insurance out of pocket.
So many have asked how to support us during this difficult time. Being able to focus on recovering instead of worrying about how I am going to pay my monthly bills is what we need the most. We aren't asking for help with the medical bills. We are asking for your support to help us maintain our daily life at home while I recover.
