Greetings, My name is Hiawatha Collins and I am setting up this gofundme for Robert Suarez who is a good friend and colleague in the field of harm reduction, organizing and advocacy. We have known each other for quite some time now and he is in a situation where he is in need of assistance. Many of us are unprepared when real life hits us and with this health care system we are unable to get the proper services we need while in the hospital and especially the after care when we get out. Our bills do not stop because we are sick or injured and they just continued to come in and pile up on us with many of us not seeing a way out. I am asking on the behalf of Robert Suarez those that know him and those who do not to give whatever they can to assist him in his time of need. Many of us have been in this situation or we know someone who has.

Robert Suarez has been a harm reductionist and drug user organizer for over 20 years. He is the Board Chair at NC Urban Survivors Union in Greensboro NC, as well as a leadership team member of the National Survivors Union, the United States Drug Users Union. Robert has served as an advisory board member for many organizations across the United States and internationally, including as a Meaningful Involvement of People Who Use Drugs board member for JBS International Inc. He is well known for lifting up people who use drugs as the most talented, gifted, and blessed individuals on the planet. But right now, Robert needs the help of the community after so many tireless years of effort. So many of you may know him—won’t you aid him now?

Robert has been hospitalized three times in the last 3 months navigating life-threatening health conditions. Right now, he is attempting to obtain physical therapy so that he can gain strength in his lower extremities. He has suffered from blood clots in his lungs and mild heart issues along with back, hip and leg issues due to poor circulation.

Like many of us, Robert still lives in poverty, despite all of the contributions he’s made to our work over the decades. On top of handling his own health issues, he is the primary caretaker of his chronically ill partner. The least they deserve is to be comfortable at home where they can convalesce. They need food and the ability to pay bills while he recovers. Won’t you help us give that to them?
