Hi, my name is Annalise. Easter weekend my best friend Riley and I were taking a walk at the Wilson Middle School soccer fields when we were approached by an off-leash pit bull that had been running around the fields. The dog owner yelled, "don't worry he's friendly". Riley and I stood in place not wanting to spook the dog as he got closer. We were confident that it was just a friendly dog wanting to say hi. As the dog came closer I began to feel uneasy as it tugged on Riley's shorts. What happened next was so fast. The dog sunk its teeth into Riley's left leg as the dog owner watched on. I will never forget Riley’s scream, as the dog bit her leg and pulled her to the ground continuing to bite down. Everything happened so fast that neither of us had time to react. The dog owner tried to call for the dog but the dog didn’t listen. But instead of the owner running over to stop his dog he just walked over leashing the dog so the dog has time to do serious damage! Riley grabbed at her leg unaware of the damage the dog created. As we sat there trying to comprehend what happened we remember the dog owner saying "I'm going to put the dog in the car, I'll be back". I started to take care of Riley and watched the dog owner disappear over the hill and drive away. He fled the scene and left us there to take care of ourselves. Luckily we had our phones, I called my mom because we live very close to the field and then I called Riley's dad. As we waited I tried to comfort Riley the best I could. It was then that I realized the seriousness of her injuries. My mom and Riley's dad rushed to the scene where my mom called 911 and using a pair of Minga London socks I had in my bag per the instructions of 911, pressed the sock to the open wounds while Riley's dad assessed the situation. Riley had huge lacerations down to the bone on several parts of her left lower leg. I've never seen or experienced anything so traumatic. Riley was somehow still cracking jokes as her leg was torn open in several spots. The police and paramedics showed up and loaded her into the ambulance! Six hours later Riley was getting out of surgery with 40 stitches to close the wounds she sustained. She ended up staying the night and was released Sunday afternoon. Riley is doing better and slowly recovering. She is the strongest 17-year-old that I know but will have a long road of recovery ahead. Now her family is left with the medical bills and will have to endure the long litigation process of prosecuting the dog owner for his gross negligence and unwillingness to render aid. I know they will appreciate any help!
