Hello everyone,
I moved to New York State for my graduate program at Alfred University. I flew into NYC to spend time with my partner, buy a car, and to get some cheap furniture. Alfred, where my graduate program is located at, is in the more rural part of the state (5hr drive away). So, the city was a great place to visit and prep for the final part of my move from Alaska to New York.
While in NYC and having such a short amount of time, I looked online to buy a car within my budget and found a helpful seller who was selling his son’s “college car”. I am now finding out I was scammed.
The seller stated there was nothing wrong with the car and it would pass inspections “with flying colors”. Yet, the car he sold me has 2 active recalls [1 being a Toyota recall for Takata Airbags]. It also needs several repairs [Transmission repairs, brakes, and safety issues] to pass the NY state inspection and emissions testing. My vehicle inspection is due on Friday August 23rd. It’s really a big headache to fix all these things, as he must have paid off a mechanic to delete the error messages to pass the inspections when he owned the vehicle. To add insult to injury, when an auto parts worker used a OBD2 scanner on the car, the odometer mileage from the scanner vs. the car’s dashboard are different. This shows the possibility of altering odometer mileage which is fraud.
I have spent nearly all my available money purchasing this vehicle, but I now must buy a lot of parts and pay mechanics for the repairs. On the bright side, the Toyota dealership in Rochester will be replacing the Air Bag recall, but the cost of gas, time, and possible overnight there adds to the already building expenses. Approaching the start of my grad program is very exciting, unnerving, and lots of other emotions, but this car debacle has given me ENOURMOUS amounts of stress.
If you can donate, I would greatly appreciate it. If you can share and help the visibility of this, that is also amazing! All funds will go to fixing this car and maintaining it.
Anything helps!
Xisrigidisddhin, and I apologize for having to ask.
