Hi, Bill (William Richardson) is an American hero. A retired veteran who transports dogs to match with their forever families. He also transports for rescue organizations. While on the tail end of a transport he had an accident. He is okay, but his vehicles are not. I would like to raise money to cover his personal expenses he’s accrued so far, and his deductible (2k).
Here is his Facebook account of what transpired:
Well, it has been an exciting couple of days since our deliveries on Saturday.
Enroute home, the driver's side rear wheel came off of the truck at 64 MPH with no advance warning.
The axle shaft shorn into two pieces.
And, yes, this would be the same assembly that has now been 'professionally' repaired THREE times in six weeks at an out of pocket expense exceeding $3,250.
This 'repair' didn't last 4 days.
Poor Betty is most likely totaled and the trailer most assuredly is since the frame is obviously bent.
The PA State Police were absolutely amazed, as was I, that I was able to keep it within my lane of travel for the most part.
Since I had no brake pressure on the truck, my only known alternative at the time was to jack knife it in order to stop it. Talk about a '5 coupon' ride.
Woo! Wee!
Had the cause been known in advance and more time had been available, the electric trailer brakes would also have been a good alternative choice but I would have had to remove a hand from the wheel to activate them.
You just have milliseconds to respond to these situations and I believe the right choices were made.
I did swap a little paint with a family hauling a 5th wheel RV.
The silver lining is that everyone is safe and unharmed.
When inspecting the trailer, EVERY kennel was intact and unharmed!
I set that trailer up to survive worst case scenarios and this definitely qualifies as such.
I have already notified the groups regularly serviced.
Red Fern will be on 'vacation' as I suspect some very serious litigation is soon to commence.
P.S.
Once stopped, the rear of the truck was on fire, so I had to come out of retirement for that.
