West Portal is one of San Francisco's hidden gems and Fuji restaurant has been in the heart of West Portal's dining for over 25 years. Shannons mother who immigrated from Korea in the 1980s, started this restaurant to make their American dream come true. Shannon began working at her family restaurant at 16 and took over the business shortly after. From cooking in the kitchen and making sushi, to managing her team, Shannon had to learn all of these business aspects on her own from a very young age. Being a female minority entrepreneur has not been easy but Shannon has overcome many challenges along the way. When COVID hit, her doors continued to stay open for the community as she wanted her guests to have a sense of comfort and normality during those crazy times.
On Monday, April 18th, Shannon received the devastating news that her restaurant had caught on fire. She rushed over and stood helplessly as the brave firefighters worked tirelessly to put out the fire. Hours after, the fire was finally contained. She was escorted into her restaurant to gather what was left which honestly was not much. Fuji held all of her dreams and has captured many smiles and laughter these past 25 years.
To Shannon, Fuji was not only her business where she worked to support her family, but it was her liveliness and joy. Anyone who steps into her restaurant knows how much love she puts into every aspect of her business. Shannon really strives to make sure her staff and her customers are treated like family and feel at home. Fuji is completely destroyed by the fire - the smoke and water damage has ruined more than 500k worth of business property. The building will take over a year, if not more to rebuild. Thankfully, no one was hurt and Shannon and her staff are safe.
Let's help Shannon and her team through these extremely hard times. Your donations will help relieve some pressure off of her and her staff during the closure and will help rebuild one of the best restaurants in West Portal. Shannon is so grateful for all of the meaningful relationships she’s built with all of you and is extremely appreciative for all of your support. She looks forward to the day she can welcome everyone back with open arms.
