In 2022, I ran my first half marathon to raise money for NCUK, now I'm taking on my first marathon in Manchester on 27th April!
Each year in the UK, around 6,000 people are diagnosed with a Neuroendocrine Cancer. It can occur in people of any age or gender and can develop in many places throughout the body.
Mums Story
Mum’s journey with Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs) began in October 2020 after a simple request for HRT, a routine ultrasound scan resulted in a referral for fibroids and a “cyst” on one ovary. The following April, mum had a total hysterectomy and the “cyst” turned out to be a secondary grade 1 neuroendocrine tumour. The subsequent weeks of scans and tests to try to locate the primary tumour were difficult but she was fortunate to be cared for by a fantastic specialist Multi Disciplinary Team. It was a great relief to be informed that surgery to remove the primary tumour in the small bowel was possible, however, further secondary NETs were located in the lymph nodes and the liver which meant even more extensive surgery was needed.
In July 2021, mum had major surgery to remove all the NETs they could. We were told that, as her cancer had already spread to the lymph nodes and secondary sites, that it was treatable but not curable.
Mum receives ongoing cancer treatment to keep the NET's "stable", and whilst the symptoms are challenging, she makes the most out of living her life and I couldn't be prouder.
We are so grateful for the support NCUK has provided to us and I want to raise money to support the great things that NCUK do to:
- Raise awareness for this type of cancer which is not widely known about
- Provide support to patients and their families
- Support vital scientific and clinical research projects that will help to better understand the causes of Neuroendocrine Cancer and treatment options
