Rachel, 19, is a loving, warm-hearted and selfless girl who despite all the challenges life threw at her, faced them with an unbelievable spirit and smile on her face.
Rachel battled cancer as a child for many years, and as a result of her treatments she then struggled with various health issues and hospitalizations throughout the years, and most recently underwent a spinal surgery in March of this year in Toronto. She was forced to quit school as a result of becoming immobile, followed by many difficult months as she healed and fought through therapy. This has been an immense struggle for Rachel and her family.
Just when she thought she was on the path to recovery, she received the news that she requires a complex spinal surgery. Except this time, what she needs to get her life back, is not available in Canada.
With advancements available in Europe, the international surgeons have confidence that she will "get her life back" and regain her ability to live normally as a young girl. Unfortunately this is not something they were able to achieve here.
Rachel's parents must now prepare to travel overseas to Germany in January, to give their daughter what she needs to get back to living a healthy and active life.
This girl deserves a break, and the hardships she and her family have faced, they have always accepted with grace.
They will now embark on a difficult journey, where they will be far away and separated from their other two children, family and home.
Rachel's driving force and strength comes from the confidence of her medical team awaiting her and the hope of returning home and getting back to school to pursue her dream in life, which is to be the person on the other side; to heal sick children.
