Hi, my name is Jim. My wife Carol and I are fund raising to help Fred Njuya. We have known Fred for several years now, and we have found him to be a good friend and a compassionate and caring person who cares for others and his family. Below is Fred's story. After reading about Fred, we hope you will join us in making a donation to help Fred at this time.
Pastor Fred is a friend of ours who needs assistance. Originally from Uganda, he owned and ran a farm there as well as serving as a pastor. He was an ally for gay people by allowing them to work on his farm. Because of his support to LGBTQ+ persons, the local authorities took Fred in for interrogation and physically injured him. During a visit to the US in 2019, Fred decided that he would apply for asylum. Currently he has temporary work status, but he is still awaiting notice of a hearing of his case.
Fred had to leave his wife and four children in Uganda, and he is the main means of support for his family. They also sought asylum in nearby Nairobi, Kenya as the Ugandan authorities were threatening them as well. He has worked hard over the past few years to study and receive his certified nursing assistant certificate so that he could provide more support for his family including schooling for his children. For the last three years (that included the COVID epidemic), Fred has been working sixteen-hour shifts in nursing homes in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.
Unfortunately, Fred’s work as a nursing assistant involves among other things much lifting of residents in the nursing homes. The work has taken its toll on Fred’s physical health. He has long-term chronic pain and damage due to the beatings he suffered by the Ugandan authorities. The lifting has aggravated and caused additional damage, and as a result, Fred recently needed surgery to repair tissue in his groin area that was already damaged by the authorities. Fred is limited in the work that he can currently do because of a lengthy recovery from his surgery, and it has become clear that he will need to secure work that will not require heavy lifting to avoid further injury. Currently he is working fewer hours in the nursing home laundry while he recovers and determines next steps for employment.
All of this makes for some serious financial concerns for Fred. He is not able physically to earn the money he was making when he was working double shifts at the nursing home. Fred supports his wife and three children who live in a small apartment in Nairobi. Fred has sold property that he owned in Uganda to help send his oldest daughter to a college in Cypress where she is studying public health. Malaria and other diseases are constant challenges for his family.
Currently, Fred is working with an immigration attorney in Boston to expedite his immigration case. Fred needs money to give the attorney so that he can send in Fred’s medical records to the immigration services.
Please consider a financial gift to Fred. We are trying to raise $5000 to assist Fred with attorney fees, funds for his family in Kenya for apartment rent, food, internet fees for his children’s schooling and his daughter’s college expenses while he is limited in his ability to work.
Please send any assistance to the GoFund Me Fred site. Thanks for your help to our brother who has shared God’s love to LGBTQ+ persons in a nation where it is illegal to be LGBTQ+ or to assist those persons. Fred risked his life for the LGBTQ+ community; now let’s join together to support him and his family!
