On what should have been a routine doctor’s appointment at 27 weeks pregnant, our world changed in an instant. I was admitted to the hospital with severe preeclampsia. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, my blood pressure could not be controlled, and at 27 weeks and 3 days pregnant, I underwent an emergency C-section due to the risk of developing HELLP syndrome.
As overwhelming as that experience was, it was only the beginning of our journey.
After our son, Niko, was born, doctors discovered he has a rare metabolic condition called Phenylketonuria (PKU). Because our local hospital was not equipped to provide the specialized care he needed, both Niko and I were urgently transferred by helicopter to BC Children’s Hospital.
While we are incredibly grateful for the care Niko is receiving, the unexpected transfer has created significant financial challenges for our family. We have learned that many of our travel expenses, ferry costs, and daily food expenses are not covered. At the same time, we are trying to balance life at home with our older child, who is attending school and participating in sports while we spend our days at the hospital.
At this point, we do not know how long Niko’s hospital stay will be. We have been told it could be as late as August, but his timeline will ultimately depend on his progress and medical needs.
We are asking for help to ease the financial burden of travel, meals, and other expenses so that we can focus on what matters most: being by Niko’s side as he grows stronger each day.
Any donation, no matter the amount, is deeply appreciated. If you are unable to donate, sharing our story would mean the world to us.
Thank you for your kindness, support, and for keeping Niko in your thoughts during this difficult time.
He is already so strong and feisty with him only being under 900G.
we are just taking it one day at a time!
