Hello! Most of those who will see this already know me, but for those who don't, let me introduce myself.
My name is Shanna. I live in a small town in Eastern KY. I love my community and have consistently worked in a pharmacy setting for over 10 years. I have a daughter (age 20) and a son (age 13) who still share my home. They are both students locally. I love my dogs, acts of service, a good book, and Appalachia.
My roots here are deep, and it has always been a goal to promote and support causes in my area, especially those that focus on providing resources for unsheltered individuals and providing healthcare access to those on recovery journeys.
I have seen the power of community and what can be accomplished when we act with purpose and passion.
In early July, I was diagnosed with early-stage endocervical cancer as a result of HPV exposure at some point in my life.
As someone who has never had major health issues, a cancer diagnosis at age 46 was a shock.
Fortunately, I have a great healthcare team and action plan. I began an aggressive course of chemoradiation in September and will soon add brachytherapy and immunotherapy to the list of treatments.
Up until now, I have maintained a normal routine and work schedule. However, the next month will require me to take some unpaid time off to finish therapy and allow myself to recover physically.
It is very difficult for me to allow myself to be vulnerable and ask for assistance for my own needs, but I have been humbled by this disease.
My family would be grateful for any donation to help cover this month's home utilities, medical expenses including my insurance, and to offset the travel expenses of my bi-weekly trips to Lexington for treatment.
I am confident that I will be able to return to work soon and I plan to use my experience and story to educate, advocate and offer hope to those who also find themselves face to face with a life-changing illness.
If unable to donate, please share the link. And most importantly, be kind.
