My name is Nico and I have started this fundraiser with my Wife Molly, for her.
In 2020 Molly was diagnosed with Multifocal Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma, in short, Thyroid Cancer.
The Cancer has spread from her Thyroid into nearby Lymph Nodes in her neck and evidence of the Cancer could also be seen on her lungs.
In order to treat this Cancer, Molly underwent Major Surgery and removed over 70 lymph nodes from her neck in what is called a Left and Central Neck Dissection. Additionally they removed her Thyroid in a Total Thyroidectomy along with 3 out of 4 of her Parathyroids which regulate her calcium levels. The last Parathyroid was so damaged that it will not function.
There have been several complications following this Major Surgery in which Molly suffered from Hypocalcemia and Tetany which resulted in a medical emergency on the Ward.
When Molly was finally released to come home, it was found that the major wound across her neck was not healing properly and she needed daily visits from district nurses to pack the wound and make sure that healing was encouraged.
After this surgery, she then needed to have a high dose of Radioactive Iodine in order to try and deal with the remnants of the Cancer.
The surgery and treatment caused a trauma response in Molly's body and she developed Fibromyalgia. This has caused Molly's nerves to incorrectly act as if they were receiving pain. They would also cause her to struggle with managing cold and hot temperatures along with the difficulty of regulating her body heat anyway from the removal of her Thyroid.
Molly's body was experiencing so much pain that it became debilitating for her, and resulted in her leaving her Higher Education and to try and find a job that was better suited for her to manage day-to-day.
Unfortunately, in 2023, the hospitals detected that the Cancer had not been dealt with from the first Surgery and Radio-Iodine Treatment and she would need a further Surgery, back in the Central of her Neck as well as some into her Right Side.
This Surgery would have to cut through healed scar tissue and muscle and reopen her wound in order to remove more Lymph Nodes and explore to find if there was Cancer sitting elsewhere in her Neck.
Despite this additional surgery, they have been unable to eradicate the cancer and have told Molly that she may always have what's currently classed as Dormant Cancer Cells. However, the consultants are struggling to maintain suppression of the Thyroglobulin cells (These are cells produced by a Thyroid. Since her removal, there should be none in her body.) There is a High Risk that her Cancer will become Active again.
As the Thyroglobin is currently detectable, this means that there are Thyroid Cells in her body.
As a result of this traumatic Major Surgery, Molly's Fibromyalgia was heightened and led to a later diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Pain Syndrome and Chronic Migraines.
The pain that Molly now experiences in her body is so much that she is unable to walk unaided around the house and now requires 24/7 care and assistance. Anything that requires her to leave the house such as appointments, Molly has to be in a Wheelchair as she is unable to tolerate any more than the few steps from the Living Room to the stair lift.
Even this is painful and difficult and requires a mobility aid and supervision by me.
She takes incredibly powerful painkillers in order to manage her symptoms day by day.
She has since developed uncontrollable twitches, spasms and jerks that also cause her muscles to painfully lock into place, which can last minutes, hours and even days.
Molly is not able to sleep in a normal bed. Molly has a profile hospital bed but during flare ups, she can only sleep in a Riser Recliner and has an interrupted sleep with her pain jolts and flares.
The spasms and flares that Molly has is caused by her muscles tightening and releasing, sometimes rapidly. Molly already has pain and extreme fatigue and this contributes to the worsening of her symptoms.
Molly has tried her best to function as much as she can, but in July 2024, she had to step away from work following advice from her GP and Consultants. She attends the Neurotherapy Center in Saltney, Chester on a weekly basis where the incredible staff there work with Molly to help manage the Neuro-based symptoms.
This GoFundMe has been opened in an effort to try and help Molly gain some independence as she can't use a self-propelled wheelchair due to issues with her left arm after surgery.
She wouldn't be able to sustain the movement without causing pain and a severe flare up that can leave her in a debilitated state for days.
Molly does use a Wheelchair that I push for her, but having an Electric Wheelchair can give Molly a bit of freedom in her surroundings.
We are hoping to raise enough to allow Molly to purchase a Electric Wheelchair which would allow her a small bit of freedom when attending the Neurotherapy Centre as during her day-to-day functions, she isn't able to move and function freely.
The funds would go to purchasing the Electric Powered Chair, with an additional battery and the required cables as well as adjustable leg rests. It will also be used to buy a cover for the chair, as well as a clear waterproof cover for the joystick and a joystick for the carer who is behind the chair to assist in case of emergencies.
Any help with any donations is received with a huge amount of gratitude and appreciation. If you are not able to donate but want to share Molly’s story, we would also greatly appreciate this too.
