Maria is a 30-year-old single mother of three young children, ages 7,8, and 13, who has been bravely battling breast cancer for many years. Recently, we received the heartbreaking news that her cancer has metastasized to her lungs and Cardiac lymphatic vessels/nodes. She has been in the ICU for over a month, enduring multiple intubations and surgeries while fighting for her life. Maria has already completed radiation therapy, and while some doctors are recommending hospice care, others believe she may still have options with new specialists at UCLA. Unfortunately, Medi-Cal insurance is very limited, and seeking care outside the system comes with significant financial costs. With Maria’s mother and family members stepping in to care for her children, the family has also suffered great financial hardship.
