A few months ago in July, Krista Wissink received the devastating news that she has an aggressive form of breast cancer. Only weeks after discovering a lump, she began chemotherapy, leaving little time for her and her family to prepare for the financial and emotional impact of this diagnosis. Her oncologist urged her to begin treatment immediately, which meant stepping away from her massage therapy practice three weeks earlier than expected. The speed and intensity of this diagnosis has left Krista and her family reeling as they face the long road ahead.

As a self-employed RMT, Krista doesn’t qualify for medical EI. Her savings have gone toward supporting her four children—two currently in post-secondary (at BCIT and UVic) and two younger ones still at home. While she has some insurance coverage, there is a three-month waiting period with no income at all, and even then, the monthly payout will only cover about 25% of her usual earnings.

Krista and Jay have been deeply rooted in the Pender Island community for over 12 years. Krista has cared for many as a healthcare professional, while Jay has served as a first responder with the Pender Island Fire Department for 30 years. Now, it is our turn to care for them.

Your support will help Krista and her family manage the many costs that come with cancer treatment and living on a Gulf Island—travel to appointments, uncovered medications, and the high costs of daily living. It will also help them continue supporting their children in school, music, and athletics, all while Krista works to keep her practice afloat during her treatment and recovery.
