Many of you know my amazing, incredibly strong sister, Kiersten, and has witnessed the crazy journey she’s been on while battling cancer.

In August 2018 Kiersten was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer at the age of 19. She had a thyroidectomy shortly after in September. In 2020 Kiersten had to have a central neck dissection to remove more masses. The beginning of the next year, in 2021, she had to have Radioactive Iodine treatments. Unfortunately it didn’t end there. Last July she had a PET scan, where they found a small mass in her chest, which at the time wasn’t a concern because of how small it was. The doctors just wanted to keep an eye on it.

Fast forward to this year, Kiersten had a CT scan done and they found that the small mass in her chest had grown quite a bit. The situation became more serious than anticipated. On March 28th Dr. Braze and Dr. Beck did a biopsy to figure out what we are facing, and what the next course of action should be.

Today we found out that the mass growing in her chest is in fact Thymoma. Thymoma is a rare form of cancer that typically affects people between the age of 50-60 years old. This is far from the outcome we had hoped for, but we have no choice but to stay positive! She is scheduled for a partial Sternotomy on April 25th to remove the mass. This is a major surgery, and it requires a 6 week recovery time. Depending on the outcome, she might also have to go through chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

Unfortunately Kiersten will be out of work during her recovery, 6 weeks. As much as I know she doesn’t want to ask for help, the financial burden of this whole journey over the years has been very heavy on her. It’s time.
