Kena Rae Davidson had recently started a full-time job with HomeGoods, and was looking forward to benefits and training for management, when she was admitted to ER and then the hospital on September 12, 2022. She had been managing liver damage since October 2021, but her bilirubin was sky-high on that day, requiring immediate hospitalization.

After four days on the surgical floor, she was moved to the ICU, where she spent the next eleven days heavily sedated, most of those days on a ventilator. In the middle of that ICU stay, her kidneys stopped working, pneumonia set in, and she had septic shock. Prognosis wasn’t good.

Since then, Kena has had a room on the surgical floor again and has been there since September 26. She has kidney dialysis three times a week, frequent blood transfusions, sometimes twice daily, and physical and occupational therapy. Because of a bleeding issue, she can’t be moved to rehab, and with low platelets, any surgery comes with high risks.

Kena has a ten-year-old son, Crosby, who is smart, creative, and enjoys school. He is a fourth grader enrolled in Journey, a program for advanced children. He just started playing the violin and says he wants to learn to play every instrument, starting in the fifth grade when he can be in a band. Kena and Crosby love to sing together, and he knows how to harmonize.

We are facing a lot of unknowns. Kena is too sick to return to work. What we do know is rent, utilities, car insurance, phone bills, violin rental, and school expenses are ongoing.

Should Kena be able to leave the hospital, we will consider a move to a nursing home, but that comes with a lot of ‘ifs’ and additional costs. If you can contribute monetarily in any way, it would be greatly appreciated.
