Help Kelly on her long road to recovery

Dear Family & Friends,

We are creating this Go Fund Me on behalf of our mother Kelly Styles who suffered serious injuries on June 2 in an accident at Salmon Beach. She was in the sauna alone and blacked out. She fell from the upper bench onto the hot sauna stove. She was air-lifted to Vancouver General Hospital that night, and had surgery to relieve contusion on her spine. Which went smoothly.

The fall caused her several small fractures in her face and upper vertebrae. She suffered a spinal injury and she is currently unable to walk. She does have feeling in her legs, but she will require rehabilitation for an undetermined amount of time in Vancouver while she re-builds strength and learns how to walk again.

Her arm suffered 2nd degree burns and will require a skin graft. Her hand was badly damaged with 3-4th degree burns which means she will have her left thumb, index, and middle finger amputated. Kelly is still currently in the ICU at Vancouver General Hospital awaiting surgery for the burns.

The road ahead is a long one with many physio, rehab and therapy sessions. We currently don’t know how long her stay in Vancouver will be at this time as we are taking it day by day. Kelly has shown tremendous progress in such a short amount of time which gives us all hope that she will walk on her beloved Salmon Beach again. She has lots of family and friends who have been very supportive at this time. She is so thankful to have family and friends to lift spirits during this difficult time.

Her husband Ross is currently with her in Vancouver until she is able to move back to the island. He is staying busy learning where all the best parking and SkyTrain routes are. It may be several months before they are both able to return home.

Both Ross and Kelly want to thank all the first responders, medical and hospital staff, friends, and family. You all helped save her life, and we are forever thankful.

In the short term, funds will be used for travel expenses and bills for Ross and Kelly to be comfortable during their stay in Vancouver. Long term funds will be used for Prosthetic and medical devices for Kelly’s long road of rehabilitation ahead.
